Prime Suspect

Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison is a middle aged woman detective working in a man's world. She has to be 200% better then her male peers to get any respect or recognition. However, she is up to the task. She is tough and self confident. Her personal life has suffered because of her devotion to her job. Prime Suspect is a very gritty and thought provoking series. Helen Mirren is superb as always in the role of DCI Jane Tennison. A great series!

1991

"Prime Suspect 1"

When a young woman is found brutally murdered, and the DCI in charge is unable to take up the case, the role is passed on to Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison, the first female DCI to handle such a responsibility. Between a slippery suspect and resistance from her team of detectives, Tennison has her hands full.

1992

"Prime Suspect 2"

A year after her first murder inquiry finds Detective Chief Inspector Tennison at the top of her game and in a precarious relationship with a fellow officer, Detective Sergeant Oswalde. When she's asked to take on a new case, it seems like another prime opportunity - but she is about to become entangled in an investigation that will find her struggling for balance in her professional and private life.

1993

"Prime Suspect 3 - Part 1 &2"

Detective Chief Jane Tennison has been transferred to a new station and finds herself enmeshed in an already lost cause known as Operation Contract. Jane is now working for the Vice Squad. The team goes into the underworld of teenage prostitution, pornography and runaways.

1995

"Prime Suspect 4 - The Lost Child"

A young mother is found lying in a pool of blood, her baby daughter missing and car stolen. Jane Tennison has just been discharged from hospital having terminated her pregnancy. She has now been promoted to Superintendent.When the mother starts to recover, she tells Jane that she has seen a strange man with two little girls watching her and her baby in the park. The description fits that of pedophile who has recently come out of prison.

"Prime Suspect 4 - Inner Circles"

The murder of a mundane country club manager has been staged to look like a sexually perverse accidental suicide, but the evidence soon points to murder. The local police blame a gang of youths; however, Jane believes it is club member. As she tries to carry out her investigation Jane finds herself up against a a community who refuse to help her discover the truth.

"Prime Suspect 4 - The Scent of Darkness"

An old case comes back to haunt Tennison when a series of murders precisely replicate the prostitute killings of George Marlow. The victims are kidnapped, bound and eventually murdered, linked by their torture and the perfume of gardenias. If the murders are committed by the same person, then Jane is faced with a possible miscarriage of justice as the man convicted of the previous murders George Marlow is still in prison.

1996


"Prime Suspect 5 - Errors of Judgment
"

Having been transferred to the north, Jane is now working with a new team in Manchester. A drugs dealer is murdered and at first this seems like a routine murder case, especially when a 14 year old boy confesses. However, soon there is another murder and Jane believes it is the work of a man known as ‘The Street', who is a local crime boss. She becomes involved with trying to convict the local crime boss who has proved impossible to touch. In her personal life Jane has an affair with her boss DCI Martin Ballinger, who is also a married man.

2003

"Prime Suspect 6 - The Last Witness - Part 1 & 2 "


Jane is asked if she might consider retiring soon after 30 years in service and 7 as a Detective Superintendent. Jane ponders this and then a body of a young Serbian girl is found in a warehouse. The girl has been tortured and strangled. Jane decides to take the case over and her investigation leads her to a man who has possibly committed atrocities of war in Bosnia. She goes to Bosnia to discover the truth. On her return she is sent for by Scotland Yard who make her sign the official secrets act and warn her to stay off the case.

2006

"Prime Suspect 7 - The Final Act - Part 1 & 2 "

Episode nominated for a 2007 Golden Globe Award

Life has taken its toll on Detective Superintendent Jane Tennison. She is about to retire and her career has been her whole life. She has few friends and has had little contact with her family through the years. She recently learned that her father has terminal cancer. Jane is reluctant to admit that she has also become an alcoholic. Tennison is assigned the case of missing 14 year old girl. She is determined to solve this case as her final act. The acting is superb.
