NEWS - They have done an encore by adding three new episodes. See link to set 6 below. I have not seen the new programs yet. I will add summaries when I do.

Foyle's War

Foyle's War is different then the other series because most of the plots involve crimes that are related to war: sabotage; profiteering; treason; looting; etc.. In addition, the war has a profound impact on the character's personal lives and relationships. I also enjoyed watching the relationship (father/daughter like) between Foyle and Sam, his young woman driver, develop in subtle ways. The stories were interesting and as with most of these British mystery series believable twists. Foyle is played by Michael Kitchen.

1st Series - 2002

"The German Woman"

Foyle applies to his superintendent for permission to join the army, but has his request turned down. Meanwhile, at a time when German nationals are being interned in British camps, the beautiful Austrian wife of a local magistrate is resented by locals. When she is found murdered, a swastika painted on a nearby tree, Foyle realizes the seemingly peaceful Sussex town harbors any number of suspects.

"The White Feather"

It is May, 1940, and a German invasion is feared any day. The arrest of a young girl on a sabotage charge brings Foyle into contact with a group of English Nazi sympathizers. Foyle investigates the murder and uncovers a plot to smuggle a vitally important letter to the enemy.

"A Lesson In Murder"

A conscientious objector dies in a police cell after being refused exemption from military service by Judge Gascoigne and after being beaten up by the police. Then a young boy evacuated from London and billeted with Judge Gascoigne dies in an explosion in the garden office where Gascoigne works leading the police to suspect a revenge attack on the Judge. It also appears the judge strongly disapproves of his daughter's lover. Other suspects are the girlfriend and best friend of the conscientious objector who died. Foyle begins to wonder if the small boy killed by the bomb was actually the intended victim.

"Eagle Day"

After a bombing raid on Hastings, a man is found dead in the rubble - but from a stab wound to the heart. Foyle soon finds that the dead man was a truck driver who had been moving valuable paintings to a place of safety in Wales. In the course of investigating the murder, Foyle uncovers a plot to steal the art treasures being moved from the local museum to Wales for safekeeping. As a side story, Foyle's son befriends a WAAF and finds out about her friend who killed herself. When he tries to find out more his senior officers try to frame him for being a spy.

2nd Series - 2003

"Fifty Ships"

An American multi-millionaire, an old flame of Foyle's, and a mysterious man claiming to be a Dutch refugee, are all implicated when a dead body is discovered on a beach. Meanwhile, after his driver's boarding house is hit by bombs, things go missing, pointing Foyle to an organized ring of looters.

"Among The Few"

When a truck loaded with barrels of petrol crashes, Foyle suspects the existence of an illegal fuel racket. A scheme involving the missing fuel, RAF pilots, a bar, and a mobster involves Foyle's driver and Foyle's son.

"War Games"

A young secretary of a multinational corporation falls to her death in London and a member of the Home Guard is shot to death in the south of England. Finding how these deaths are related and how business and politics can be deadly, Foyle finds who killed these people and why.

"The Funk Hole"

The disappearance of a young boy and a break-in at a food depot lead Foyle to a funk hole, a secret retreat where the wealthy can ignore war restrictions.

3rd Series - 2004

"The French Drop"

Still trying to get closer to the war effort, Foyle asks his well-connected brother-in-law to help him get a job with a naval command center. Meanwhile, a local murder investigation puts him in a dangerous bind between rival spy agencies.

"Enemy Fire"

Foyle investigates strange happenings at a manor house converted to a burn unit for RAF pilots. The brilliant, unconventional surgeon who heads the unit has drawn the ire of his superiors for disregarding regulations that conflict with patient welfare. As well as murder, he finds a web of adultery and sabotage.

"They Fought in The Fields"

Foyle captures two German soldiers who survive the crash landing of their plane in the Hastings countryside. Nearby, two nights later, a farmer is discovered shot dead in his armchair.

"A War of Nerves"

In a month that begins with the fall of Crete and ends with the German invasion of the Soviet Union, Foyle cracks down on an organized crime racket operating in a local shipyard where a group of Royal Marines find thousands of pounds of hidden cash.

4th Series - 2006

"Invasion"

The Americans have entered the war. They are greeted in England with mixed emotions. A U.S. Army engineering unit is stationed in Foyle's district. Foyle and the Army Captain in charge of the engineering unit establish a friendship. That friendship is strained when someone is murdered at the army camp during a "get acquainted" party sponsored by the U.S. Army Captain.

"Bad Blood"

A childhood girlfriend of DS Milner approaches him to help free her brother who is accused of murdering a local war hero. Foyle becomes involved when Milner asks him to see if Foyle's peer in the jurisdiction where the murder occurred will allow Foyle and Milner to reinvestigate the case. Needless to say the request is not received well, but is approved. While investigating the murder, a suspect and member of the investigative team are stricken with a mysterious disease. There is a highly classified military installation near the farm that has been the focus of part of the investigation. Is there a connection between the murder, the disease outbreak and the secret installation?

5th Series - 2007

"Bleak Midwinter"

A young girl working in a munitions factory is killed by an explosion at the factory. It appears to be an unfortunate accident. However when a woman who worked with the victim comes to Foyle saying the girl had been upset recently and had mentioned something about a theft, he decides to investigate. In addition to this investigation, DS Milner becomes the prime suspect in another murder.

"Casualties of War"

Foyle finds himself dealing with a murder near a highly classified military project, several instances of sabotage along the coast and rampant illegal gambling. In addition to his case load, the long lost daughter of a friend shows up at his door with a small son who has been recently traumatized by the destruction of his school by a bomb which resulted in the loss of a teacher and classmates. To add to Foyle's problems, a new assistant commissioner shows up to help him prioritize his workload. Foyle finds himself in crisis. Are the realities of war interfering with the rule of law?

Foyle's chess partner, a Polish Jewish immigrant and a colleague of the murdered doctor, attempts suicide shortly after the murder. Foyle has to uncover the facts surrounding these crimes.
